Provence along the water
From the waters of the Sorgue to the Verdon gorge
Water gives Provence many different faces. It emerges at the foot of a cliff, flows through towns, shapes the stone and draws the eye into deep gorges.
This trail brings together four settings photographed on Horizon Provence: a spring, canals, waterfalls and a canyon. Explore the archive photographs at your own pace, then continue with each full report.
1. Fontaine-de-Vaucluse: beneath the cliff

In Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, the walk follows the water towards the end of the valley. The cliff closes the landscape and gives the source of the Sorgue its striking setting.
The photographs show the river, its banks and the heights around it. The report also continues into the village and its history.
2. L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue: water in the town

In L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, water accompanies the streets and squares. Quays, bridges and waterwheels offer another way of looking at the town.
The report alternates views of the river with scenes of local life, moving from the landscape to the details of a wheel, a façade or a reflection.
3. The Sautadet waterfalls: stone shaped by water

At Sautadet, the Cèze meets a limestone landscape hollowed into cavities. The movement of water and the shapes of the rock create a succession of small scenes.
The photographs draw attention to the contrasts between pale stone, dark water and swirling currents. The report offers several viewpoints on the site.
4. The Verdon gorge: a change of scale

In the Verdon gorge, the water can seem tiny at the foot of the walls. The depth of the landscape turns the river into a thread of colour glimpsed between the cliffs.
This final stop opens the trail out into broader views. The report brings together perspectives of the canyon and landscapes along the river.
