Several major developments marked Avignon’s entry into the twenty-first century. Culture, new transport connections and university life provide some of the period’s defining milestones.
The historic centre and surrounding districts
The town must connect its historic centre with districts developed outside the walls. Transport, housing, shops and agricultural land are major elements in its continuing transformation.
The milestones of 2000 and 2001
Avignon was one of the European Capitals of Culture in 2000. In 2001, the opening of the Mediterranean high-speed line and Avignon TGV station strengthened high-speed connections. These milestones accompanied the development of travel and cultural activity.

The university and urban heritage
The university, founded in 1303 and abolished during the Revolution, regained full university status in 1984. The town-centre campus in the former Sainte-Marthe hospital and the scientific campus at Agroparc reflect higher education’s place in Avignon’s life.

Passing on heritage and adapting to contemporary uses remain connected. Monuments, Rhône landscapes and cultural practices form a living legacy that continues to evolve as the town changes.
