Trigance of the Gorges du Verdon

Trigance is located in the Regional Natural Park of Verdon, its appearance is characteristic of a village in Haute Provence. Perched high on a promontory, it overlooks the Jabron Valley. The Jabron is a tributary of the Verdon, which it joins near the place called "Carajuan Bridge". Trigance is located on the scenic route along the left bank of the spectacular Gorges of High Verdon.

Trigance and its surroundings have kept an authentic look and offer unspoilt countryside, the town did not allow the construction of houses around the village. The view over the Jabron Valley is splendid.

The village is charming, with alleys and stairways lined with old stone houses with thick walls. Trigance kept a medieval gate, the belfry is topped by a wrought-iron campanile, and its clock marks the rhythm of village life. The bell tower of the parish church of Saint-Michel is topped with glazed roof tiles. The patron saint of the village is St. Roch, under whose protection the trigançais were placed during the plague of 1629. A chapel outside the village is dedicated to him.

The beautifully restored medieval castle overlooks the village. The castle of Trigance depended on the Abbey of Saint-Victor in Marseille in the 9th century when it first appears in the historical records. It was the property of the lords of Trigance, feudal families of Provence: the Raimondis in the 14th century, the Demandolx in the 16th century and Valbelles until the Revolution. During the Revolution the population celebrated the abolition of aristocratic privileges by plundering the castle already abandoned by its owners. It was used as stone quarry for the houses of the village. In the 1960s Mr. and Mrs. Harman, a couple of merchants from Luc en Provence undertook to restore the ruins of the castle, a task continued by the Thomas family since 1970. The castle rises from the ruins, it is nowadays a luxury hotel and a popular restaurant. It is not open to public visits
