For its fiftieth edition in 2007, Arles’s international santon exhibition showed a selection from its collection. The photographs on this page record works presented on that occasion.
The Nativity is a Christian subject represented in many parts of the world. Each creation reflects the materials, clothing and craft traditions of its cultural setting.
Materials and interpretations of the Nativity
The works came from Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe. Woven straw, carved wood, engraved crystal and clay gave very different forms to the same characters. See also the feature on the venues of the 2007 exhibition.
